Since his first solo show in
1994, Jamieson Miller's art has dramatized the tension between its
formal and its thematic orientations. Reviewers and critics alike have
repeatedly highlighted the ability of Miller's work to rearticulate
biological processes. And yet, by virtue of its abstraction and its
obsession with formal compositional practices, the work also sets itself
free from any simple relationship to a referent. Hence the sense that
these often elusive sculptures are forever caught on the cusp of their
own meaning, occupying a threshold between formalism and a potentially
programmatic exploration of material, and, above all, corporeal
experiences.
