"Being a tonalist affected by Modernism my works are reminiscent of painters from the "Between the Wars" period: early Dobell and Rees, late Gruner, Margaret Preston and the realist works of Stanley Spencer, like "The Leg of Mutton Nude. "Between the Wars" was the last great period of representational painting. It's a tradition to which I consciously seek to reconnect. Of course one cannot live in the past and the challenges for representational painters are considerable. Bread, meat, milk and water are sedate and timeless. I hope they, even when painted with veracity, are able to convey a sense of loss, nostalgia and ineffability." |
