"Everyone is an expert on the human body, not in rendering it, but at detecting errors. This makes the human body the most difficult subject to paint. I haven't shied away from the naked male body despite it not usually being seen as having an aesthetic value the equivalent of the female nude. Frankly I find men more enjoyable to paint. their bodies are more planular, less rounded and the changes in direction are more appealing to the eye. Often I've had to compromise on a pose as availability to models often comes through 'painting clubs' like Brandling St in Alexandria and Ashton's at The Rocks. Others I have employed by myself when I don't want to compromise on a pose. I've tried to create narratives by placing the models in imaginary settings and referring to other works from art history." |
